Fix AI provider not configured errors

AI summaries, insights and the assistant need at least one working AI provider key. Learn what each AI error means and how to set up or fix providers in Settings.

Updated in Troubleshooting

Overview

MetaLens360's AI features — drift insights, narratives, summaries, the AI assistant and the Help panel's Ask — call an AI provider using API keys your workspace supplies. If no provider is configured, or none of them answers, those features show a message instead of AI output. Everything that doesn't need AI keeps working: measured data, charts and analysis are still shown.

Common messages you might see:

MessageMeaning
"No AI provider is configured, so only the measured profile is available. Add a key in Settings → AI Providers."No keys at all; you get the non-AI version
"AI service unavailable. Check that a provider key is configured in Settings → AI Providers."The request couldn't reach any provider
"No AI provider answered. Add or reorder a provider in Settings → AI Providers, then retry."Keys exist, but every provider failed or was rate-limited
"AI insights could not be generated — no AI providers configured."Comparison insights need a provider
"<Feature> needs a key of your own" with an Add your key buttonYour workspace requires personal keys for generating new AI content

Before you start

  • Setting up providers needs the Manage AI providers & chain permission (ai.manage). By default Admin and Architect have it. Others see "You have read-only access to AI providers." — ask one of them.
  • Get an API key from at least one provider. Several offer free tiers; the setup wizard tells you which.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and choose AI Providers.
  2. If you see "No AI providers configured for this workspace.", click Set up AI. The Set up AI for this workspace wizard opens.
  3. Choose providers: pick one or more. Free providers are listed first; paid providers are separate.
  4. Add keys: paste each provider's API key. Keys are stored encrypted and are never shown again.
  5. Set fallback order: put the provider you want tried first at the top. If it fails, MetaLens360 tries the next one.
  6. Verify: click Run a test request. A successful reply means AI is working.
  7. Click Save configuration.
  8. Go back to the page that showed the error and retry.

Example

Priya opens a comparison and sees "AI insights could not be generated — no AI providers configured." She asks Arjun, the workspace Admin. He opens Settings → AI Providers, clicks Set up AI, adds a free-tier key and a second provider as backup, runs Run a test request, and saves. Priya refreshes the comparison and the insights appear.

FAQs

Is AI required to use MetaLens360?

No. Syncs, comparisons, code analysis and health reports work without AI. AI adds summaries, explanations and the assistant.

Why do I need "a key of your own" when the workspace already has keys?

Some workspaces meter new AI generation to the person asking. Existing AI content stays readable; only generating something new needs your key. See Choose who pays for AI generation.

Does the Help panel work without AI?

Yes. Ask falls back to showing matching Help Center articles when no AI provider is available.

Troubleshooting

"No provider answered. Check the keys and try again."

The wizard's test request failed. Check that each key was copied completely, hasn't been revoked, and that the provider account is active. Then run the test again.

AI worked yesterday but fails today

A free-tier provider may be rate-limited or its key expired. Add a second provider and move it up the fallback order.

You lack ai.manage. See Permission denied errors.
